I received a call on my cellphone around 12:28pm today from a stranger. At the other end of the line, a teeny weeny voice introduced herself as Ms. Aida calling from blurp...blurp...blurp. Honestly, that was exactly what I heard.
"Boleh saya bercakap dengan cik so-and-so?" she queried, saying my full names perfectly.
"Ya", I answered.
"Ini cik so-and-so ke?" she asked again, saying all my 3 names in its entirety complete with my last name. Obviously she was reading a script.
"Ya". Came my curt reply. "Aida buat panggilan dari blurp...blurp...blurp. Aida dapat nama cik so-and-so dari Mastercard", she went on again saying all 3 names complete with my dad's name. I was beginning to fidget and be afraid of myself. Why she decided to address herself as "Aida" was beyond me. That was her self-introduction to me-as if we have been bosom buddies since time immemorial. Maybe she thought she could endear herself to me despite us never having to meet each other. It didnt work. Tick...tick...tick...
"Ya Aida, apa cerita ni Aida?" I asked politely for I was among acquaintances.
"Macam ni cik so-and-so (again all 3 names were mentioned). Cik so-and-so (yup, again--the works) ada Mastercard dan pada hari ini cik so-and-so (yet again!) telah dipilih untuk ...." she seemingly tried to tell me the story but I knew...if I didnt stop her right there, another 5 words and all my names would start to tumble out from her lips again. How much longer were we going to circle the airport, only Aida knew & I wasnt about to find out.
And so I took the liberty to cut her off. I told her that I wasnt interested in whatever she was selling. Aida was on a telemarketing mission. Pity though--I never knew what it was that she was trying to market.
